About this tool

What does Blur Background do?

Blur Background creates a portrait-style depth effect by separating the main person from the scene and applying blur behind them. When supported, the tool loads a browser-based MediaPipe segmentation model. A manual focus fallback remains available if the model cannot load or the subject is not a person.

Step-by-step guide

How to use Blur Background

  1. Upload a portrait with a clearly visible subject.
  2. Run automatic segmentation or choose manual focus mode.
  3. Adjust blur strength and edge softness.
  4. Preview the cutout edges and download the portrait.

Understand the result

How to read and refine the output

Strong blur mimics a shallow depth of field but can expose imperfect mask edges. Edge softness blends the transition between subject and background. Hair, transparent fabric and objects held away from the body are the most difficult areas for segmentation.

Practical advice

Tips for better results

  • Use a well-lit portrait with clear subject separation.
  • Avoid backgrounds with colors identical to clothing.
  • Use moderate blur for natural results.
  • Inspect hair and shoulders before downloading.

Important limitations

What this tool cannot guarantee

Automatic mode is optimized for people rather than arbitrary products or animals and requires loading a model file from a CDN. It may fail offline. The manual fallback uses an elliptical focus region and is not true semantic segmentation.

Common questions

Blur Background FAQs

Does automatic blur use AI?

Yes. Automatic mode uses a browser-loaded person-segmentation model when available.

Is the photo uploaded to the model provider?

No. The model files download to the browser; image processing stays on the device.

Why is part of my hair blurred?

Fine hair can be difficult for segmentation. Reduce blur or increase edge softness.

Can I blur a product background?

Use manual focus mode for non-person subjects.
