Designed for common tasks

When PDF compression is useful

Large PDFs can be difficult to send by email, upload to application portals or publish on a website. Compression reduces the amount of storage and bandwidth required while keeping each page readable.

Image-heavy PDFs, scanned documents, portfolios and reports normally benefit the most. Files that already contain optimized images or mostly plain text may show a smaller reduction.

Understand the difference

Visual compression versus lossless optimization

Visual compression

Each page is rendered and rebuilt with controlled image resolution and JPEG quality. This usually produces the biggest reduction for scanned and image-heavy PDFs.

Best for:

Email attachments, online forms, scanned notes and web downloads.

Lossless optimization

The PDF structure and metadata are rewritten without turning pages into images. Searchable text, links and most interactive content remain available.

Best for:

Contracts, accessible documents, text-heavy reports and PDFs that must remain searchable.

Frequently asked questions

PDF compressor FAQ

Is this PDF compressor really free?

Yes. You can compress PDFs without creating an account or paying a subscription.

Does OceanofTools upload or store my PDF?

No. Processing happens locally in your browser, so the selected file is not uploaded to OceanofTools.

Will compression reduce PDF quality?

Visual compression trades some image detail for a smaller file. High Quality keeps more detail, while Smallest Size uses stronger reduction. Lossless mode avoids visual quality loss.

Can I compress a scanned PDF?

Yes. Scanned PDFs are often the best candidates because their pages usually contain large images. Balanced or Smallest Size should provide a noticeable reduction.

Can I select only certain pages?

Yes. Open Advanced mode and enter a range such as 1-3, 5, 8-10. Only those pages will be included in the compressed output.

Why is the compressed file sometimes not smaller?

The source PDF may already be highly optimized. A very small, text-only PDF can also be more efficient than a rasterized copy. The result panel will always show the actual size change.
