A probability calculator can apply a formula instantly, but the result is meaningful only when the possible outcomes and event assumptions are defined correctly. Before calculating, decide what counts as an outcome and whether events are independent, conditional or mutually exclusive.
Define the event in plain language
Write down what must happen for the event to count as a success. This reduces mistakes such as counting favorable outcomes twice or including outcomes that are not actually possible.
Check the denominator
For equally likely outcomes, probability is commonly favorable outcomes divided by total possible outcomes. The total must represent the complete set of possibilities under the model you are using.
Keep probability inside its valid range
A standard probability must fall between 0 and 1, or between 0% and 100%. A value outside that range usually means the inputs, units or model need to be checked.
Distinguish simple from conditional problems
